Sustainability

Timber stands out as a viable option for construction due to its status as a sustainable resource, making it a better choice compared to other conventional materials. Timber is renewable, and its production generally results in less carbon emissions. As defined by the British Standard, a renewable resource is one that is grown, naturally replenished or cleansed within a human time frame. Since the 1990s, timber certification schemes such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) have mandated responsible forest management.
Unlike other materials, timber has a lower embodied carbon due to the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere during the photosynthesis process while the trees grow. The stored carbon is found in the wood, bark, and leaves. When used in timber products, the net uptake of carbon is further increased, allowing for the sequestered carbon to be stored as long as the products remain in use.
Sustainable forest management practices ensure that at least as many new trees are planted as are harvested, making timber a 100% sustainable construction material. Thus, it is an ideal choice for construction products and greener construction overall.

The impact of climate change is noticeable in the supply and quality of timber, as seasonal changes are altering production rates and tree growth patterns. Our 60 years of experience in fencing and timber supply allow us to quickly recognize whether the timber meets our standards.

While cheaper options may exist, we prioritize the long-term effects of our actions, aligning with the concerns of our customers. We strive to source timber within the UK to minimize carbon emissions, but will turn to European locations that prioritize climate protection and deliver high-quality timber as needed.
